The Phantom’s 6.75-litre, 453bhp V12, 48-valve direct injection petrol engine is a hand-built masterpiece. Whisper-quiet, yet able to deliver instant, effortless power, the engine is packed with cutting-edge technology.
Direct injection means the combustion chamber of each cylinder is fed a precise quantity of petrol, delivered in a single high-pressure jet. This spray of fuel has a cooling effect on the cylinder, which allows a high compression ratio of 11:1, which in turn increases the thermal efficiency of the engine, giving greater power and torque. Variable camshaft timing and a variable valve lift mechanism precisely regulate the engine’s intake of air throughout the rev range, which helps to achieve the desired torque delivery, and also reduces fuel consumption.
The six-speed automatic transmission is ‘shift-by-wire’ - controlled by electronics rather than a mechanical linkage. With such huge reserves of torque available, in normal circumstances it pulls away in second gear, to enhance the sense of effortless progress. It also has adaptive control software, which monitors and learns the style of the driver, altering the gear selection to suit.
